Krystyna Smithers, of Jackamans Solicitors, one of our festival sponsors, gives us a glimpse of the reading habits of some of her colleagues…read on for some literary inspiration!
Jackamans has sponsored the wonderful Felixstowe Book Festival since the beginning. I handle the marketing and communications for the firm, and I thought this year I would send an email round to staff at our four offices asking them to let me know what their most loved books were, so that we could share it with you. I was very pleased to be inundated with replies – below are just a few responses!
Fiona (Fan) Hollis (Conveyancing Executive)
The Son by Jo Nesbo (Fan has most of his books and said this one was excellent).
The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult
Fan also recommends C J Sanson’s books written about crime in Tudor times.
Shirley Henney (Assistant in the Diss Conveyancing office)
Shirley’s favourite book is Out for a Duck by Tony Levy. She says: ‘it is a lovely book suitable for all ages about the writer’s experiences with ducks. The book is funny, and at times sad – a well-written book by someone who is fascinated by and loves ducks as much as I do! A perfect read.’
Mark Rowlands (Commercial Property Partner)
Mark’s top three books for different ages:
Fever Pitch by Nick Hornby. Mark and Nick Hornby share the same love of Arsenal and pretty much the same mentality!
Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. A primary age favourite. Every time Mark hears ‘Ole Man River’ and ‘my huckleberry friend’, memories of childhood come flooding back!
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. Mark can happily read – and re-read – any of her novels. ‘Introduced as O level reading at Secondary School… she’d have been the Rom-Com darling of Hollywood had she been born in this age.’
Tina Staples (Conveyancing Executive, Diss)
Tina’s favourite book is Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. Although not a ‘Discworld’ fan at all, Tina loves this book and finds it laugh out loud funny.
Sharon Curtis (Legal Secretary in the Ipswich Family department)
Shadows in Bronze by Lindsey Davis
‘A funny historical detective novel. The characters are well drawn, particularly the hero. This is the second book in a twenty book series. I have chosen the second and not the first because the first book of the series is not one of the best. However, I could have chosen any one of the others (although they do have to be read in sequence).’
Daggerspell by Katherine Kerr
‘Fantasy novel with many interesting twists. The first in a long sequence, the first six books are probably the best. These books are fascinating because they don’t follow a normal timeline and the characters turn up again in different stories sometimes hundreds of years apart. Self-contained stories within the books can be only a few pages or half the book long, and characters can suddenly re-emerge two or three books later!’
