We are thrilled to be able to announce the winners of the 2016 Felixstowe Book Festival short story competition, on the theme of Gateways.
Our winners are … (Drumroll please) ….
In first place: A6 DNR by Helen Chambers
A story about the end of life, beautifully told using the framing image of flight. All three judges were drawn to this story from the outset, and found the writing both magical and moving.
Helen has won publication in Suffolk Magazine, along with a 12 month subscription, and £50 cash.
Second place: Heroes of my Heart by Chris Strang
Told in free verse, this detailed the author’s journey through heart surgery and the subsequent recovery. Humour and pathos combined in a clever writerly style that all of the judges admired.
Chris has won £10 cash.
Third place: The Lucky Ones by Jane Bailey
Skilfully crafted, this told the timely tale of Meia, a refugee, during her perilous flight across borders. The judges admired the sensitive way the subject was handled, and also the redemptive emphasis on hope.
Jane has won £10 cash.
Congratulations to all three of our winners!
Please join us on Sunday June 26th at 7.30 for the Bedtime Story event, when all three stories will be read aloud. The event is free (please reserve a ticket so we know numbers) and held in His Lordship’s Library. This is the final event of the book festival, and always a special one.
Ruth, Jeanette and Liz look forward to seeing you!
