Maggi Hambling’s acclaimed War Requiem, created specially for the Dovecote at Snape Maltings, is a haunting installation comprising some 50 paintings of anonymous victims and ravaged battlefields; its powerful and personal response to the horror, destruction and futility of war is an enduring theme of Hambling’s work.
Nicola Upson’s new novel, Stanley and Elsie, tells the story behind Sandham Memorial Chapel – Stanley Spencer’s unique tribute to the forgotten dead of World War One – and vividly recreates the domestic battlefront of Spencer’s own life through the eyes of the women who knew him best.
Chaired by Mandy Morton, Maggi and Nicola follow a sell-out 2017 Festival event with a fascinating discussion on art and the casualties of war.
