It is at once a bildungsroman\, a love story\, a western and a thriller\, taking his privileged hero\, Harry Cane from the sunlit gardens of Edwardian suburbia\, to the newly-colonised prairies of Western Canada. Patrick will talk about the interrelated challenges of writing historical fiction\, of basing a novel squarely upon his family history and of writing a novel about sexuality set in a period in which none of the characters has the psycho-sexual vocabulary to describe their desires.
