The popular idea about the years before the Great War is that it was an age of serenity and prosperity, with Britain unchallenged as the world’s greatest power. Simon Heffer will talk about the history of Britain in the decades before 1914, The Age of Decadence, and show how the reality was somewhat different: indeed the five years immediately before the war saw a turbulent and divided society riven by unrest that at times threatened revolution.

Chaired by Richard Walker.
