Novelist and screenwriter Patrick Gale describes his latest novel, A Place Called Winter, as a little like Brokeback Mountain meets E M Forster’s Maurice. It is at once a bildungsroman, a love story, a western and a thriller, taking his privileged hero, Harry Cane from the sunlit gardens of Edwardian suburbia, to the newly-colonised prairies of Western Canada. Patrick will talk about the interrelated challenges of writing historical fiction, of basing a novel squarely upon his family history and of writing a novel about sexuality set in a period in which none of the characters has the psycho-sexual vocabulary to describe their desires.
