Orwell Writers will be running a day of creative writing workshops, considering the positives and pitfalls of writing historical fiction.  There will be three workshops. Two morning sessions of 1.25 hours and one afternoon session of 1.75 hours. They will be fun, interactive and informal, suitable for new and experienced writers alike.

Attending as a guest presenter, local writer, Mai Black, who has recently published a collection of historical poems entitled Thirty Angry Ghosts, will be leading the first part of the second workshop. In this she will be discussing  the importance of research when writing historical works.  She will give readings of two of her poems, and will have copies of her book available to purchase.

  1. Language and vocabulary. 10-11.15 Explore the clues which anchor the reader in the correct historical time frame
  2. Researching your area of historical interest 11.45-1pm.  Mai Black will be sharing her strategies for ensuring accurate depiction in historical writing
  3. Putting ideas into practice approximately 2-3.45pm. Using your notes from sessions one and two, you will be able to begin writing an historical piece. There will be the opportunity to share and discuss your work should you wish to do so.

Cost: £10 for the day and there are no concessions.  This can be booked through the website.   Capacity is 20.

Refreshments: Hot drinks, crisps and cakes will be available to purchase. Either bring a packed lunch or buy from nearby shops or pubs.  No hot food or alcohol to be brought into the venue please.
